As the Mobile World Congress event at the end of February draws closer, details of more soon-to-be-released phones are popping up. Today we have information about two new devices from Samsung, the Galaxy Mini 2 smartphone and the Galaxy Tab 2 tablet.
The Galaxy Mini 2 S6500’s specs are a bit better than the Mini S5570 it replaces, although it’s still a relatively underpowered phone. It contains an 800MHz processor, 3.3” screen, a 3MP camera and 3GB of storage. Disappointingly, it will run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), a fairly outdated version of the mobile OS. A release date and price weren’t specified, but rumors point to a launch this month.
Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 is billed as an updated version of the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy 7.0 Plus, and includes a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, front and rear-facing cameras, and options for 8GB, 16GB or 32GB of storage with a microSD slot for up to 32GB of add-on storage space. The screen is a 7.0” 1024×600 PLS (plane-to-line-switching) LCD display, and the new tablet will run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).
The Galaxy Tab 2 appears to offer a decent spec bump over the original Tab and Galaxy 7.0 Plus, but it might not be a great value at its price point—leaked pricing information puts the WiFi-only version at $450 and the WiFi+3G version over $500. In a market crowded with cheaper options such as the $199 Kindle Fire by Amazon, Samsung may have a difficult time moving the Tab 2 off shelves and into customers’ hands.
The Galaxy Tab 2 is scheduled for release sometime in March.
