Hurricane Alex Effectively Terminates Oil Cleanup Efforts

Hurricane Alex Effectively Terminates Oil Cleanup Efforts
Hurricane Alex

Hurricane Alex

With Alex stirring in the gulf, all clean-up efforts have ceased.  This 11-week old spill will be in limbo of any clean-up actions until Alex moves through.  The hurricane is not projected to affect the area of the seeping well, but the effects of the storm are still reaching that area  and causing some minor setbacks with cleanup.

Alex is reported to be heading toward the Mexican-Texas border.  Expected to make landfall today, the category1 storm has halted almost all clean-up efforts off the coasts.  Alex is projected to persist through Thursday.

The US has accepted international submissions for the cleanup efforts.  The accepted help from foreign governments are mostly in the form of containment booms and skimmers.  At this point there have been no accepted proposals for international assistance with engineering.

With Alex hitting the coast today, the only thing coastal residents can do is wait to see how much more damage the winds and waves may do by pushing the oil inland and stopping most of the cleanup efforts.

Spy Picture Released, Russia Plays Down Spy Claims

Spy Picture Released, Russia Plays Down Spy Claims
Anna Chapman Russian Spy

Anna Chapman Russian Spy

Russia has now responded to allegations that spies from their country have been gathering sensitive information from America. Denying the allegations wholly, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that the US Police “had let themselves go.”

The two countries have both stated that they do not want this to affect relations. There have been some beliefs that this latest scandal could be related to the Cold War, but those allegations have been shrugged off.

A picture has been released of one of the spies standing underneath the Statue of Liberty, initially found on Anna Chapman’s profile on a social-networking service. Chapman is also believed to be an extremely experienced spy who is one of the more sophisticated spies in Russia. In other news, it has been believed that an 11th spy has been arrested in connection with investigations in Cyprus.

Russian media has responded lightly to the allegations which are being made, and they are placing the story from the perspective of a misunderstanding between the FBI and Obama’s White House. However, it is yet to be seen in front of a court whether or not there is substantial evidence that could incriminate these spies for crimes that include espionage and money laundering,

South Carolina Gamecocks Defeat UCLA to Win the College World Series
South Carolina College World Series

South Carolina College World Series

South Carolina has won the College Baseball World Series in a 2-1 walk-off victory over the Vegas favorite, UCLA.

Whit Merrifield drove in the winning run with one swing of the baseball bat in the bottom of the 11th inning with Scott Wingo scoring the final run. Matt Price picked up the win with 2.2 innings of work, racking up three strikeouts and only one hit.

South Carolina was down 1-0 going into the 8th inning when Robert Beary pinch-ran for Brady Thomas, who went on to pick up a pinch-hit single. Beary advanced to second on a groundball out, then scored all the way from second a fielding error to tie the baseball game.

Neither team would score in the ninth inning, so the game that would decide the champion of college baseball for 2010 went into extras. An uneventful 10th ensued, and then came the 11th inning.

Price pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 11th, striking out the last batter looking. Wingo walked to lead off the bottom of the inning, advanced to second on a passed ball, and then to third on a sacrifice bunt.

Merrifield’s final at-bat won the game, and only seconds later the South Carolina Gamecocks out of the SEC were building the traditional baseball player dog pile in the middle of the field.

A fitting ending to a stellar season of College Baseball – one heck of a baseball game.

Scandal After Russian Spies are Arrested in America

Scandal After Russian Spies are Arrested in America
Russian Spies

Russian Spies

Already fragile U.S-Russian relations have taken a massive blow following confirmation that 10 Russian spies have been arrested in America. One spy is believed to still be at large, with Russian authorities shaking off the claims as ‘contradictory’.

It appears that many of the spies were living seemingly normal lives by holding down normal jobs and living together in pairs. It is believed that all of them could expect up to five years in prison, with some facing additional charges due to allegations that they have been transferring money illegally.

This news follows an FBI investigation which revealed that some of the details which the Russian Government requested included activity in the White House and information regarding the ongoing tensions that America shares with Iran. There were also requests for data regarding the US’ intelligence on nuclear weapons, something which has been a tense subject between the two countries in the past.

Arrests have been made in three states and it is believed that sentencing has been suspended until late July while further evidence is gathered. Information which was sent to Russia has been distributed in a number of ways online, including advanced encryption which allowed for sensitive details regarding US security to be weaved into picture files shared over the Internet.

The FBI has confirmed the arrests follow years of intensive investigation.
