Vice President Mike Pence reportedly has hired an outside criminal defense attorney in relation to the ongoing congressional and criminal investigations dogging President Trump, including whether there was collusion between Russia and the Trump presidential election campaign to meddle with the 2016 election and if Trump obstructed justice when he fired former FBI Director James Comey.

Pence has retained well-known Virginia attorney Richard Cullen, who previously served as state attorney general and a chief federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia under President George H. W. Bush, according to The Washington Post.

During the Iran-Contra scandal, Cullen was special counsel to a Virginia Republican who served on the select committee. He also represented former GOP majority leader Tom DeLay in relation to his dealings with Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

The vice president could become an important witness as Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation focuses on what Trump did and said regarding ending the FBI's investigation and firing Comey.

"I can confirm that the Vice President has retained Richard Cullen of McGuireWoods to assist him in responding to inquiries by the special counsel," wrote Pence spokesman Jarrod Agen, in an email to the Post. "The Vice President is focused entirely on his duties and promoting the President's agenda and looks forward to a swift conclusion of this matter."

Pence's move comes only a few weeks after Trump retained his own personal attorney, Marc E. Kasowitz, to represent him in the Russia-Trump campaign investigations.
