Democrat Jon Osoff opened up a seven-point lead51 percent to 44 percentover his Republican rival in a new poll of the upcoming special-election runoff vote for the vacant Georgia seat in the House of Representatives. The poll, which the Atlanta Journal Constitution survey published Friday, is the second public poll that shows Osoff with a seven-point lead.

Osoff and his rival, Republican Karen Handel, will go head-to-head in a runoff election June 20, which will determine who will represent Georgia's now-vacant sixth Congressional districtthe previous incumbent, Tom Price, left to serve as President Trump's HHS secretary. Handel got a slightly higher vote count but not a majority in the initial election on April 18, and the lack of a majority winner triggered a runoff election, per election law.

This poll coincides with the sum total of polling of the race that shows, on average, Osoff leading by 2 or 3 points. Mark Roundtree, a Republican consultant, acknowledged that the poll numbers seem to trend in Osoff's favor.

"Obviously, it's competitive, but there aren't any public polls that have shown Handel winning," he said.

Osoff has benefitted in recent weeks from a record $24 million influx in campaign contributions. He's also garnered the support of some disaffected Republican voters, as Friday's poll indicates: 13% of Republican respondents said they are voting for Osoff.

Observers attribute this party-crossing to dissatisfaction with Trump. Chip Lake, a Republican consultant, said that the president's favorability ratings in the sixth district are pretty low, which "inevitably hurts Handel and any other Republican running in a district like this one."

The poll interviewed 1,000 registered voters and ran from June 5-8.
