Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has requested a formal inquiry into a Chinese company that is working with the family business of Trump son-in-law and advisor Jared Kushner. The company, Qiaowai, is under suspicion of violating U.S. immigration laws by guaranteeing Chinese investors green cards if they invest in a project that company is undertaking with Kushner's firm.

The company is partnering with Kushner on One Journal Square, a New Jersey luxury development complex. Investigations by the New York Times and Reuters had indicated instances in which the Chinese firm offered H1-B visas, which give the holder lawful residence in the United States conditional on employment, in return for their investments. Grassley cited these investigations in a May 24 letter to Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly and Security

"Recent press reports indicate that Qiaowai has touted its relationship with the current administration as a guarantee that potential EB-5 [investor visa] investors will receive lawful permanent residence in return for a no-risk investment in One Journal Square," Grassley wrote.

Kushner retired from Kushner companies at the start of this year, but Qiaowai spent months after the election touting its "link" to the White House and President-elect Trump to investors. He would indirectly profit from the New Jersey development if it reaches completion, however, due to his family investments in it.

Grassley endorsed Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign and has stood by him in the Senate so far. But he is also on record as being a critic of the H1-B visa program in general and has been a frequent advocate for transparency in government.
