The FBI special counsel probing allegations of collusion between Russia and the Trump presidential campaign has announced that it is now formally investigating President Trump for possible obstruction of justice. The counsel is zeroing in on last week's testimony by former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump had fired amidst the FBI's investigation of Trump campaign staff and White House officials.

Heading the counsel is Robert Mueller, also a former FBI director. The Department of Justice appointed him to lead the probe in the wake of Comey's dismissal from the agency. In his Senate testimony, Comey had said that Trump asked him in February to drop the investigation into Michael Flynn, his fired national security advisor--a request that Comey would not comply with. Trump's subsequent dismissal of Comey less than three months later prompted questions of wrongful termination.

Trump inadvertently fueled these speculations further during a meeting afterward with a visiting Russian delegation. The president told his guests that getting rid of Comey had relieved him of "great pressure" in light of the investigations that Comey had been leading.

Mueller's investigation will interview witnesses inside and outside government and has secured upcoming interviews with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, National Security Agency Director Adm. Michael Rogers and former NSA Deputy Director Richard Ledgett. These interviews could take place later this week.

If the counsel finds grounds for an obstruction charge, it will submit its findings to Congress. Congress will then have the prerogative of whether or not to proceed with impeachment proceedings.
