United States President Donald Trump has condemned the "evil losers" behind Monday night's attack on a pop concert in Manchester.

The attack claimed the lives of approximately 22 people and injured dozens more.

In remarks delivered alongside Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, Trump lambasted the "wicked ideology" behind the attack, moving beyond what British security officials and politicians have thus far said in laying responsibility for the assault.

President Trump used the Manchester attack to drive home a message has delivered on his maiden foreign tour as president, calling on countries to root out terrorism.

"I extend my deepest condolences to those so terribly injured in this terrorist attack and to the many killed and the families so many families of the victims," he said.

The White House had earlier said that Trump was being updated on the terror attack by his national security team.

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the assault.

Trump added that the United States stands in solidarity with the people of the United Kingdom, saying that he would not call the terrorists monsters "because they would like that term."

"I will call them, from now on, losers, because that's what they are," he said.

He added that society could have no tolerance for this continuation of bloodshed, and for the slaughter of innocent people.

Trump and Abbas, who also extended his condolences, had been expected to discuss the US leader's plans to advance the moribund Middle East peace process.

Trump hoped to kick-start what he has described as his "ultimate deal."

He was greeted on Tuesday morning by Abbas at the latter's headquarters in Bethlehem.
